India Unveils SAF Feasibility Study to Drive Green Aviation

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The Ministry of Civil Aviation, in collaboration with ICAO and the European Union, has released the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Feasibility Study for India. The study, undertaken under ICAO’s ACT-SAF programme, assesses India’s potential to produce and adopt SAF using domestic feedstocks such as biomass and agricultural residue.

Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu highlighted India’s target of achieving 1% SAF blending by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030, noting the potential to cut lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 80% and reduce crude imports by 20–25 million tonnes annually. He also stressed the benefits for farmers through value chains built on agricultural residue.

The study’s findings are being discussed at a two-day workshop in New Delhi with ICAO, EASA, DGCA, and industry stakeholders, aimed at shaping India’s national SAF policy and positioning the country as a global leader in green aviation.
