Liebherr Replaces Overhead Cranes at Ehingen Plant; Rieger & Moser Marks 80th Anniversary

Liebherr used the company holiday in early August to replace five ageing overhead cranes at its Ehingen production plant with five new double-girder travelling cranes, each with lifting capacities between 40 and 63 tonnes and spans of up to 28 metres. The heaviest, a 63-tonne crane, is equipped with two hoists and weighs up to 41 tonnes.
The challenging operation was carried out by three mobile cranes from the Schmidbauer Group: an LTC 1045-3.1 compact crane, an LTM 1110-5.1, and an LTM 1130-5.1. Despite the confined space in the assembly hall, the cranes dismantled old girders and hoists and precisely installed the new components. Special angled jibs were used to navigate the minimal clearance below the hall ceiling. Liebherr credited the success to the skill of experienced operators and its advanced crane control system.
The project coincides with Rieger & Moser’s 80th anniversary. Founded in 1945 as an automotive workshop, the company has evolved into a trusted partner for industry, construction, and infrastructure, and is now part of the Schmidbauer Group. Under the anniversary theme “80 years: Strong from the region. Connected to the future”, Rieger & Moser will host a celebration in September 2025 with employees, families, customers, and partners, honoring its legacy while looking ahead to future growth.
