The Ministry of Coal has successfully facilitated the launch of scientific coal mining in Meghalaya, marking a major step toward regulated and sustainable mining in India’s North-East region.
Two coal blocks in the state have commenced production following official approvals:
- Saryngkham A Coal Block (East Jaintia Hills) began production on June 3, 2025, after receiving opening permission on March 10, 2025.
- Pyndengshahlang Coal Block (West Khasi Hills) started operations on June 5, 2025, with permission granted on May 2, 2025.
This development reflects the Ministry’s commitment to legal, safe, and scientific mining, contributing to the energy sector while ensuring environmental responsibility.
The Ministry has urged all State Governments to support scientific coal mining and help streamline coal transportation across the region, crucial for strengthening India’s energy security and boosting economic growth in the North-East.
