India Among Best-Performing G20 Nations on Sustainability: Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that India is one of the best-performing G20 nations in meeting sustainability commitments, while addressing CII’s 20th Global Sustainability Summit in New Delhi.
Highlighting India’s achievements, Goyal noted that the country has already installed 50% renewable energy capacity and is on track to achieve 500 GW by 2030, powered by Make in India products and self-reliant manufacturing. Renewable power, he said, is now available at globally unmatched prices of ₹4.60–₹5.00 per kWh for 24-hour clean energy supply.
He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisive role in ensuring the success of COP21, where India rallied the Global South to make sustainability a collective global responsibility. He criticised developed nations for failing to meet their Paris commitments, saying the promised $100 billion annual climate finance has yet to materialise.
Calling on startups to innovate in areas like water harvesting and energy efficiency, Goyal cited the success of the UJALA LED bulb scheme as proof of how small steps can drive large-scale transformation. He stressed that India’s future growth will rest on sustainability, quality, competitiveness, and inclusivity, ensuring benefits reach “the last man at the bottom of the pyramid.”
